The church is deeply committed to community outreach events, actively supporting its faith-based community with various services. A notable mural painting titled 'Christ the Good Shepherd,' created by Miss Caroline M. Smith from Wilmington, was dedicated on Sun., Apr. 8, 1945, and presented by Mrs. J. Medford Davis in memory of her father, Geo. W. Thomas. What began as a Sunday School transformed into a Methodist church on June 10, 1888, following a generous donation from Abel Sevil of a 14,425 sq/ft plot. This church not only hosts regular church services but also engages in community outreach events, fostering a vibrant, faith-based community that is family friendly. The completed joining of these two buildings took place in 1904 following a merger between the Methodist Episcopalian (ME) Church and the Methodist Protestant (MP) Church. This faith-based community has since provided various church services and community outreach events, creating a family-friendly environment for everyone. More information to come.
Meet the Pastor
Pastor Mark Lewis
I have served as a Licensed Local Pastor (LLP) since 2015. I am a graduate of Smyrna High School, Class of 1978. After receiving a call to ministry and having that call affirmed during an Emmaus Weekend in 2010, I discerned a leading to greater involvement in Kenton United Methodist Church. During that time, I served as Lay Leader and later as a Certified Lay Minister (CLM).
Following my appointment, I returned to higher education to complete my undergraduate studies, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Management from Wilmington University in 2017. After a season of prayerful discernment with my wife, I continued my theological education and received a Master’s degree in 2021 from United Theological Seminary in Ohio.
I served part-time at Woodside United Methodist Church for six years while concurrently maintaining full-time employment at Modern Maturity, where I served for four years as the Fitness and Pool Director. I was subsequently appointed to the Harrington Charge in a three-quarter-time capacity, where I have faithfully served Asbury United Methodist Church, Prospect United Methodist Church, and Trinity United Methodist Church for nearly five years. Currently, I also serve as the Spiritual Director for the Delmarva Emmaus Community.
My wife, Helen, and I celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary on January 17. She is also a graduate of Smyrna High School and served as a Licensed Local Pastor at Houston United Methodist Church for three years. We are the parents of two children, Michael (41) and Sara (36), both graduates of Smyrna High School. We acknowledge with gratitude that it is through the guidance and faithfulness of Almighty God that our marriage has endured and flourished. We consider ourselves truly blessed to share a lifelong commitment to God and to one another.
Theologically, I affirm belief in the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I believe that Jesus Christ died upon the cross for the forgiveness of sins, rose again on the third day, ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God. I believe that Christ will come again to judge the living and the dead. I am committed to the faithful proclamation of the Word of God as revealed in Holy Scripture and hold that the Lord’s Prayer should be recited as a regular and integral part of Sunday worship.
